Digital Products Refund Information Under UK Law

Under UK law (Consumer Rights Act 2015), digital products are generally non-refundable once downloaded or accessed. You waive your 14-day cooling-off right when you agree to download content immediately. However, if the digital product is faulty, misdescribed, or unfit for purpose, you are entitled to a repair, replacement, or a full/partial refund.
The standard approach for digital product returns and refunds is governed by specific regulations:
1. The 14-Day Cooling-Off Period (Change of Mind)
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations, you have 14 days to cancel a contract for a digital purchase, but this right is lost the moment you begin downloading or streaming. Sellers must ask you to explicitly acknowledge this loss of cancellation rights at the time of purchase, usually via a tick-box. If they fail to do so, you retain your right to cancel for up to 14 days.
2. Faulty Digital Content
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, digital content (e.g., apps, software, games, or e-books) must be:
  • Of satisfactory quality
  • Fit for purpose
  • As described
If it does not meet these standards, you do not have an automatic right to reject the item. Instead, the retailer must first attempt to repair or replace it within a reasonable time and without causing significant inconvenience.
3. Claiming a Refund for Faulty Content
If the retailer fails to repair or replace the digital product, or if it takes too long, you can request a price reduction or a full refund. If the faulty digital product damages your device, you can also claim for compensation.
4. Where to Find Official Guidance
